Bitcoin via MSBT

The hurdle
Updated Oct 2, 2026

In plain English

MSBT is the simplest way to own bitcoin in a regular brokerage account. Each share is a slice of real bitcoin held in cold storage. The price moves with bitcoin, one for one, minus a 0.14% yearly fee. In this library, bitcoin is the hurdle: the yardstick every growth idea gets measured against. This note explains the yardstick.

The hurdle itself: bitcoin's ~30%/yr bogey, minus the 0.14% fee~30%

MSBT is not ranked against the hurdle. It defines the 30% one. Its return is bitcoin's return, less a small fee, in both directions.

Deep dive

01

Bitcoin is the 30% growth bar

Every library needs a unit of measurement. Here it is bitcoin: the growth bar asks whether an idea can compound the way bitcoin has over long stretches, roughly 30% a year. MSBT does not try to beat that. It hands you the bar itself, as a ticker you can buy in any brokerage account. When a growth idea is measured against MSBT, the question is whether it can beat simply holding the yardstick.

02

The cheapest wrapper won

More than ten funds sell the same thing: spot bitcoin in an ETF. When the cargo is identical, the only lasting edge is price. MSBT charges 0.14% a year, the lowest in the group, undercutting the big early issuers by nearly half. Morgan Stanley's sixteen-thousand-advisor distribution network does not hurt either. In a commodity business, being the cheapest is a real moat.

03

What you actually own

Each share is fractional ownership of real bitcoin, held in cold storage by Coinbase with BNY Mellon as administrator. The fund tracks the CoinDesk Bitcoin Benchmark Rate. There is no leverage, no futures contracts to roll, no premium games. The share price follows spot bitcoin within small creation and redemption bands. Boring structure is the feature.

04

How it differs from the leveraged bet

Some bitcoin vehicles borrow money, issue shares, and engineer a premium to the coins they hold. That machinery cuts both ways: it can amplify gains and it can unwind violently. MSBT has none of it. No debt, no share-issuance tricks, no premium to collapse. You get bitcoin's return, period, which is exactly what a yardstick should do.

05

The honest trade

There is no yield, no earnings report, no buyback. When bitcoin falls 50%, MSBT falls 50%. The long-run average price, the 200-week line near $66k, has marked the historic buying zone, which prices MSBT around $19. Everything else is patience. Own the yardstick only if you can hold it through the stretches when it looks broken.

06

Why holding beats dodging

We ran the numbers: a simulation of 4,000 ten-year bitcoin paths, testing what happens if you sell during the scary stretches and buy back later. The answer was blunt. Selling everything underperformed simply holding in 95 out of 100 paths, and the typical end result fell from about 83x to under 2x. The reason is painfully human. After you sell, bitcoin rarely drops another 30% to let you back in at a better price. Only about 4 in 10 sales ever got repurchased. The rest turned a temporary sale into a permanent exit, right before the rebound. Timing bitcoin sounds smart. The math says holding is smarter.

⚠️ What could go wrong

01

Bitcoin can fall in half.

This is the whole risk section in one line. Bitcoin has drawn down 50% or more several times, and MSBT follows it tick for tick. Anyone who cannot sit through that should not own the yardstick, because the drawdown is not a bug in the measurement. It is the measurement.

02

Nothing pays you to wait.

Stocks pay dividends. Bonds pay coupons. MSBT pays nothing. The entire return is the price going up. In a flat decade for bitcoin, this returns roughly zero minus fees. The yardstick measures; it does not compensate.

03

It is still young.

MSBT launched in April 2026 and holds under a billion dollars, a fraction of the biggest bitcoin ETF's fifty billion plus. Liquidity is fine at ordinary size, but the fund has not been tested by a real panic yet. Youth is not a flaw, but it is a fact.

04

The rules could change.

The fund is structured as a grantor trust for tax purposes, which keeps reporting simple today. A change in how these products are taxed or regulated would not change bitcoin, but it could change the wrapper, and the wrapper is the whole product here.

05

The fee war is not over.

0.14% is the floor today. A rival could go to zero tomorrow. On a $24 share that is pennies either way, but it is worth knowing the one edge here is a number someone else can match.
